Phospholipid IgM Antibodies are a type of autoantibodies (IgM class) that target phospholipids, essential components of cell membranes. These antibodies are produced when the immune system mistakenly reacts against the body’s own tissues. They are commonly associated with Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), an autoimmune condition that increases the risk of abnormal blood clot formation. The presence of Phospholipid IgM antibodies may be linked to venous or arterial thrombosis, recurrent miscarriages, or other pregnancy-related complications. However, IgM antibodies are generally considered less specific and often transient, sometimes appearing due to infections or temporary immune responses. This test is performed using a blood sample, and fasting is not required. If the result is positive, doctors usually recommend repeat testing after 12 weeks to confirm persistence and determine its clinical significance for diagnosis and treatment planning.
