Lupus Anticoagulant by DRVVT / Citrated Plasma is a specialized blood test used to detect lupus anticoagulant (LA), an abnormal antibody associated with increased risk of blood clotting. Despite its name, lupus anticoagulant does not cause bleeding; instead, it interferes with normal clotting tests and is commonly linked with Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) and sometimes Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The DRVVT (Dilute Russell’s Viper Venom Time) method works by activating the clotting process in plasma and measuring the time it takes for a clot to form. If lupus anticoagulant is present, it prolongs clotting time. The test uses citrated plasma, where sodium citrate prevents clotting before analysis. It is mainly recommended for patients with unexplained thrombosis, recurrent miscarriages, or prolonged clotting times. Fasting is not required. A positive result is usually confirmed by repeat testing after 12 weeks.
