The GAD 65 IgG test measures the presence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against the 65-kilodalton isoform of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65). GAD65 is an enzyme crucial for insulin production in pancreatic beta cells. Elevated levels of GAD 65 IgG antibodies are indicative of an autoimmune response where the immune system targets and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This test is particularly useful for diagnosing Type 1 diabetes, where these antibodies are commonly present. The test helps differentiate Type 1 diabetes from Type 2 diabetes and other forms of diabetes. It can also be used to identify latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). Accurate measurement of GAD 65 IgG is important for confirming a diagnosis, guiding treatment strategies, and monitoring disease progression.
