In celiac disease, the immune system produces EMA in response to the presence of gluten, leading to inflammation and damage in the intestines. The EMA test is highly specific for celiac disease and helps confirm a diagnosis, especially in patients with symptoms like chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, or malabsorption. The test is often used alongside other diagnostic methods, such as tissue transglutaminase (tTG) antibody tests and biopsy of the small intestine.
