Hepatitis B core antibodies (anti-HBc IgM) measure the presence of IgM antibodies against the core antigen of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the blood. These antibodies are typically produced during the acute phase of a hepatitis B infection. A positive anti-HBc IgM result often indicates a recent or acute hepatitis B infection. It can also help distinguish between acute hepatitis B and chronic infection, as well as identify individuals in the early stages of infection. This test is used to diagnose and monitor hepatitis B infection.
