Factor II (Prothrombin) Mutation Detection is a genetic blood test used to identify specific mutations in the F2 gene, particularly the common G20210A mutation. This mutation can increase the production of prothrombin, a protein involved in blood clot formation, and may increase the risk of developing abnormal blood clots, especially venous thrombosis. The test is commonly advised in individuals with unexplained or recurrent blood clots, thrombosis at a young age, or a relevant family history. It detects the genetic mutation rather than measuring the current level or activity of prothrombin. Since this is a genetic test, fasting is generally not required. A blood sample is typically collected for DNA analysis.
