IgG antibodies indicate a past infection or exposure to the virus and generally persist for life. High levels of IgG antibodies suggest that the person has been infected with HSV-1 or HSV-2 at some point, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic. - **HSV 1 & 2 IgM Antibodies**: These tests detect immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies, which are produced early in the course of an infection. The presence of IgM antibodies suggests a recent or acute infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2. However, IgM can sometimes be present in chronic infections or reactivation episodes, so results are often interpreted in conjunction with IgG testing and clinical symptoms.
