The Mantoux test is a diagnostic tool used to detect infection with Tuberculosis (TB). It is also known as the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST). In this test, a small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) is injected just under the skin of the forearm. After 48 to 72 hours, the injection site is examined for a raised, hardened area called induration. The size of this swelling is measured in millimeters to determine whether the result is positive or negative. A positive result indicates that a person has been exposed to TB bacteria, but it does not confirm active disease. Further tests like chest X-ray or sputum analysis are required for confirmation. The Mantoux test is simple, cost-effective, and widely used for screening TB, especially in high-risk individuals such as healthcare workers or people with weakened immune systems.
