The Clostridium Difficile Assay PCR (Stool) test is a molecular diagnostic test used to detect the presence of Clostridium difficile in a stool sample. This bacterium can cause intestinal infections, especially after the use of antibiotics, leading to symptoms like watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and inflammation of the colon. The test uses Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology to identify specific toxin-producing genes (toxin A and toxin B) of the bacteria. These toxins are responsible for causing illness, so detecting their genes helps confirm an active infection. A stool sample is collected and analyzed in the laboratory, and results are usually available quickly due to the high sensitivity of PCR. This test is more accurate and faster than traditional culture methods. It is commonly recommended for patients with persistent or severe diarrhea, particularly those with recent antibiotic use or hospital exposure.
