Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small, disc-shaped cell fragments found in the blood. They are crucial for blood clotting and wound healing. Produced in the bone marrow from large cells called megakaryocytes, platelets help prevent excessive bleeding by clumping together at sites of blood vessel injury and forming a blood clot. This process involves the release of clotting factors and the formation of a plug to seal the wound.

Normal platelet levels are essential for maintaining hemostasis, the balance between bleeding and clotting. Abnormal platelet counts can lead to various health issues: low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia) can result in excessive bleeding or bruising, while high counts (thrombocytosis) can increase the risk of clotting disorders. Regular monitoring of platelet levels is important for diagnosing and managing these conditions.
